Greece during World War II (1940 – 1944) – The Axis Occupation of Greece

What happened to Greece during World War II? In this video you’re going to learn about life in Axis-occupied Greece in WW2. When war came to Greece the country was under the 4th of August Regime, led by General Ioannis Metaxas. On 28 October 1940 the Greco-Italian War started. The Greek Army repulsed the Italian invasion. In April 1941 the German invasion of Greece (the Battle of Greece) began. The Greek Army fought along side Commonwealth Forces but the Germans prevailed. Despite stubborn resistance they also achieved victory after the Battle of Crete. The Axis occupation of Greece saw Greece being partitioned. Greece saw a terrible famine (Great Famine). A puppet government (Hellenic State) was installed headed by Georgios Tsolakoglou. From 1943 pro-German Security Battalions were raised. The Greek Resistance in WW2 consisted of many groups: the EAM-ELAS; EDES and EKKA.

  1. Many important topics in this video but the deep differences between different factions of the Greek resistance caught my attention. Also, the fact that Metaxas regime which had some fascist and totalitarian tendencies was attacked by fascist Italy seems ironic although he was never close to the Axis. Thank you, Stefan!

  2. NO NOW WE KNOW THAT METAXAS POISON BY THE ENGLISH SOE ,BECAUSE HE DIDNT LET THE ENGLISH ARMY INTO THE GREECE , AND THE KORYZIS AFTER HIM , HE DIED BY 2 SHOTS KILL HIMSELF____?????? FACKING ENGLISH SKAMS

GERMANS CUT A AVTAL(lisabone trety) WITH THE ENGLISH SO THEY NEVER BE BOMDED IN THE RETRET BACK TO GERMANY

  3. 2:53 The northern Metaxas Line was never "pushed back" or "crushed through" on the contrary, after a 3-day fierce resistance the highly outnumbered troops defending the Metaxas line were told by the German forces that it was pointless to continue fighting and that the Greek Government had surrendered.

  4. The greek civil war wasn´t between leftist-partisans and reight-wing-partisans, but mostly between leftist partisans and previous-Nazi-collaborators. The british allied with the leftists mostly during WW2, cause they were the most serious partisan-party, and with the previous-nazi-callaborators directly after the war´s end. On the big isle of Rhodeos, the british with the leftist-partisans even managed to take the german positions and take all the germans as POWs, who were directly allowed to keep their arms, but fight under british command, in order to arrest the greek-leftist-partisans, that had just helped them arrest those exact germans !!!!!!!!!!!! After the civil war began, with strategic-, war-material- and financial-support for the previous-nazi-collaborators, and 1year went by, the british run out of money, and the US took over the financing of the greek fascists, that they themselves been fighting against just 1 year earlier, with the result of genociding their leftist -W2-allies of just 1year-earlier !!!!!! It was highest treason from end to end from Britain/USA, over the greek public. As I always repeat: The Americans weren´t mad at the Germans, for the reason that the Germans invented fascism, no, not at all; they were mad at them only because the Germans invented fascim before the Americans themselves could !!!!!

  5. Honestly, if you decide to cover the Greek Civil War be prepared for an absolute shitstorm in the comments. It is a highly controversial and debated topic that is still birthing political and social division to this day. It's not even taught in schools. You can read 10 different books on the Greek Civil War and you will get 20 different views on the events that transpired.

  6. Stefan, you should have a video dedicated to the Battle of Crete and the 'crimes' the British committed by basically surrendering the whole island to the hands of the Axis. A story many people do not know.

  8. 10:55 Correct. My grandpa was killed mid-1944 from the self-called communists. It was since late 1943 that people in south Peloponnese felt that EAM was consolidating power by acting as politicians, judges and enforcers of "law" amongst the Greek people.

  9. My grandfather and his siblings were just kids during ww2 but resist .All his village did.The Germans went to search for weapons. At his house was only their mother, she hide in a oven. Then in the village oven were outside, they say her and put fire. She burnt and died.Another day they caught my grandfather and tortured him but never denounce .He was very brave. Unfortunately, he died in the Civil War when my mother was only 6 months. She grew up as an orphan. Consequences of all this.Civil war were created by others.Greeks have passion about politics but they have to not be influenced by others, this is the lesson from history.I have heard other histories about the ww2 but it would be too long.
